You can’t dual boot macOS and Windows on newer Macs the way you did on older Intel models. The architecture change from Intel chips to Apple’s custom silicon broke the traditional method. Virtualization is now the only viable path for running Windows on these machines.
The Architecture Shift
Apple transitioned from Intel processors to its own M1, M2, and M3 chips starting in late 2020. This move changed everything about how the operating systems interact with hardware. Intel Macs used x86 architecture. Apple Silicon uses ARM architecture. Windows for Intel doesn’t run on ARM chips. You need a different version.
Microsoft released Windows 11 for ARM. This version is built to run on Apple’s hardware. It includes its own emulation layer. The emulation lets x86 apps run inside the ARM environment. This works surprisingly well for many programs. Some things still break. Older drivers often fail. Heavy gaming performance can suffer.
Virtualization: The Only Real Option
Boot Camp is dead. Apple removed this feature from all Macs with Apple Silicon. You cannot install Windows as a separate OS that boots at startup. There is no partitioning trick. There is no EFI shim.
You must use a virtual machine. This means Windows runs inside macOS. It shares the system resources. It runs as an application. You switch between macOS and Windows by minimizing or closing the window.
Parallels Desktop is the most popular choice. It integrates deeply with macOS. You get features like Coherence Mode. This mode hides the Windows desktop. It shows individual Windows apps as if they were native macOS apps. The performance is excellent. It uses the hardware efficiently. The cost is high though. You pay a yearly subscription.
VMware Fusion is another option. It recently became free for personal use. The performance is good. The integration isn’t as polished as Parallels. Some users find the setup more technical. It supports a wide range of Windows versions.
UTM is a free, open-source alternative. It’s based on QEMU. It’s slower than the commercial options. It’s better for older hardware or basic testing. It doesn’t have the same level of graphics acceleration. Don’t expect to play modern games on it.
Which Windows Version Should You Choose?
You need Windows 11 for ARM. Windows 10 for ARM is still supported but getting old. Most developers are moving to Windows 11. It has better ARM compatibility in some areas. It also looks more like macOS in terms of modern UI elements.
Microsoft provides official ISO images for Windows 11 ARM. You can download them directly from Microsoft’s developer site. Don’t try to use an Intel ISO. It will not install. The installer will reject the hardware.
Performance Expectations
Apple Silicon is fast. The M-series chips have powerful cores. Virtualization overhead is minimal with modern hypervisors. You will notice some lag when switching between apps. The emulator adds a small cost. It’s not noticeable for basic tasks.
Gaming is tricky. Xbox Game Pass works on ARM. Many x86 games run with acceptable performance. Emulation isn’t perfect. Some anti-cheat systems block virtual machines entirely. You can’t play Call of Duty or Valorant on a VM. They detect the environment.
