Xreal Cancels Nintendo Switch Adapter Due to Performance Issues

Xreal has halted the release of its planned Nintendo Switch adapter, a small battery-powered dock designed to connect the console to AR glasses like the Xreal 1S. The company cited reliability concerns and insufficient battery life as the primary reasons for the decision, offering full refunds plus a $30 store credit to customers who preordered the device.

The adapter, known as the Xreal Neo, was intended to allow users to play Switch games on AR glasses, offering a portable display alternative. However, testing revealed performance problems, including frame-rate drops in demanding titles like Metroid Prime 4. Xreal CEO Chi Xu confirmed this in a Reddit post, stating the company chose to cancel the product rather than release something that didn’t meet internal standards.

This development highlights a broader issue: Nintendo Switch’s limited compatibility with external displays and adapters. While other devices—PCs, Steam Decks, and Android phones—work seamlessly with AR glasses, the Switch remains a challenge. Xreal is shifting focus towards higher-end AR glasses designed for PC and console gaming, leaving the Switch ecosystem unsupported for now.

The decision underscores the trade-offs between innovation and product readiness. Though the Neo dock showed promise in early tests, its flaws proved unacceptable to Xreal, which ultimately prioritized quality over a rushed release. This move leaves Switch gamers waiting for more reliable solutions to integrate AR glasses into their portable gaming setup.
