Shhh. 🤫
Keep it quiet.
I need to whisper to people. Maybe plot a surprise party. Maybe just vent without my group chat exploding. I used to think I needed another app. Signal? Sure. WhatsApp? Fine. But do we really need to install more things?
There’s a workaround.
It’s already on your phone. The Notes app.
Yes, that boring yellow rectangle. It’s a secret weapon for privacy. Bending the rules is kind of fun, right? No downloads. No learning curve. Just built-in iOS features working overtime.
The best tool is often the one you already ignore.
Let’s fix your privacy game.
How to Set It Up
Open Notes. Hit the compose icon. Bottom right.
Type something. Just anything.
If you leave it blank, iPhone deletes it. Annoying, but okay. Type “Hello world” if you’re stuck. Better yet, start a new note. Fresh slate.
Now the tricky part. Sharing.
Tap the More button (the circle with three dots). Top right corner. Then tap Share Note.
You’ll see Share Options. Tap that.
Under Permission, make sure Can make changes is on. They need to write back, after all.
Toggle off Anyone can add people. Unless you want your secret club growing uncontrollably? I doubt it. Keep it tight. Hit Back.
Add Your Co-Conspirator
Choose how to share. Text? Email? iMessage? Doesn’t matter much.
I like Copy Link.
Paste it where you need.
Here’s the catch. You must add their contact info first. Email or phone number.
Tap the Add icon. Find their name. Type it in.
If you skip this, the link is dead to them. Useless. Don’t skip this.
Hit Copy Link. Send it off.
Wait.
They need to open the link. Tap accept. Now they’re in.
Chat Like It’s 2016 (But Cooler)
Type your message.
Hit enter.
Actually, you don’t need to hit send. Real-time syncing happens as you type. They see it instantly.
A flash of color shows up when they type. Yields the keyboard. Shows who said what.
Want to see who wrote what line? Swipe right from the center of the screen. Boom. Names and timestamps.
Still feel messy?
Go back to Manage Shared Note. Turn on Highlight All Changes.
Now every message stays colored. Yours is blue. theirs is red (or whatever color iOS assigns them). Reads like a transcript. Clearer. Less “wait, did you write that?” confusion.
Want to keep it ultra-secure? Like Snapchat style?
Delete it.
After you send a joke, delete the text.
They get the notification. They read it. But then… it’s gone.
Ephemeral messaging. In the Notes app. Crazy.
Works for photos too. Videos. Links. Drawings. Delete everything when the secret is out. No evidence.
Disappear like it never happened. 🌫️
Ending It
Secrets expire. Sometimes suddenly.
If you’re the note owner and want to stop the chatting?
Tap View Participants. Top right. Then Manage Shared Note.
Swipe left on their name. Tap Remove. Or tap the name, then Remove Access. They lose edit rights. But they can still read the old text.
Not safe enough?
Hit Stop Sharing.
This nukes it.
Note gone from their device. Gone from yours (if you delete it too). Truly erased.
If you aren’t the owner?
Just delete the note. It leaves their party. They still have it. You’re just out.
Simple. Effective. No apps required.
Just notes. And secrets.
