Google’s big pivot is here. They’re merging their search engine with their advanced AI tools. If that feels wrong to you, you aren’t stuck. There are other places to look.
Alternatives exist. Some offer better privacy. Most have a catch. Their results can be thin. You’ll scroll more. Be specific with your queries, or you’ll drown in mediocrity. Also, don’t trust the browser to save you. Using these engines in Chrome might leak data or strip away the very benefits you’re chasing.
Here are five options. They are all free. Try them.
Brave Search
Brave cares about your privacy. It blocks trackers. When it fails to find an answer, it secretly taps Google. This is an anonymous fallback. If the index is empty, it asks the giant, silently.
Then there’s the tech stack. A VPN. A crypto wallet. An AI assistant named Leo. Brave says Leo keeps your queries private. You don’t need an account. Just search.
“Your AI usage is private and secure.”
DuckDuckGo
The self-proclaimed anti-Google. It refuses to build a profile of you. No tracking. No personalization based on your sins. Just the raw web, mostly.
They’ve added tools, too. App Tracking Protection for Android. A VPN that our team found surprisingly useful for general browsing. And DuckAssist, their AI tool.
It works. It’s free. Why don’t we all switch? Maybe habit. Maybe the results aren’t quite as polished yet.
Ecosia
This Berlin-based engine plants trees. 250 million, by their count. They generate more clean energy than their searches consume. All profits go to climate action. It’s idealistic.
The mechanics are less pure. Ecosia pulls results from Google and Bing. They rely on the infrastructure they’re trying to disrupt. But in 2024, they partnered with Qwant. The goal? A European search index. Less dependence on US tech giants. It’s a start.
Qwant
Made in France. They promise not to retain or sell your search data. Clean lines. They even have a safe search feature for kids ages 6 to 12. Qwant Junior helps navigate the chaos.
Their AI integration, “Flash Answers,” is baked in. But you can turn it off. Easy settings, no hoops. Historically tied to Bing’s API, Qwant is also part of that 2024 European index push with Ecosia. Independence is messy work.
Startpage
Startpage is a mask. It’s a search aggregator that hides your identity from Google. It uses Google’s results, mostly, but strips away your digital footprint first. No cookies. No tracking. Just an anonymous request sent out into the void.
It’s like using Google without Google watching you. You get the power. You lose the price. And yes, you can also tap Bing through this veil.
Free to try. Worth it, if you value obscurity over perfection.
The choice is yours. Google is changing fast. Maybe that’s a bad thing. Maybe you’ll just get used to scrolling more. 🌿
