How Search Engine Spiders Crawl and Index the Web

Search engines don’t find results by magic. They use bots. Specifically, they use what are commonly called search engine spiders or web crawlers. These automated programs scour the internet to build a database of every site and page they can find. Without them, there is no index. And without an index, a search engine has nothing to show when you type a query.

The process is mechanical. Spiders build queues of URLs to visit. When one lands on a specific site, it doesn’t just look at the main page. It reads the text. It parses the code. It inspects meta tags—those specific, formatted keywords designed for machines, not humans, to read. It maps out hyperlinks. All this data forms a profile sent back to the search engine.

Here is the mechanic reality: a spider follows links from page to page. This is why backlinks matter. If your site is linked to from other places, the spiders find you faster. If you have no links, you are effectively invisible to the queue.

The Four Modes of Crawling

Spiders don’t just wander randomly. They operate in distinct modes to manage the massive scale of the web.

  1. Selection Mode
    One type of spider handles the initial sweep. It prioritizes which pages to visit and checks if a previous version of a page has already been downloaded. It builds the initial map.

  2. Re-visitation Mode
    Pages don’t stay static. This mode targets pages that have already been crawled. It checks for updates. If the content has shifted, the index needs to reflect that.

  3. Politeness Mode
    Servers have limits. If a spider hammers a website too hard, it can crash it or slow it down for real users. To prevent this, some engines use “politeness.” It limits how often a spider returns to the same page, ensuring servers aren’t overwhelmed.

  4. Parallelization Mode
    The web is too big for one bot. Parallelization allows spiders to coordinate. If multiple spiders are crawling the same page, this mode helps them share data and avoid duplicating work unnecessarily.

Spiders vs. Indexers: The Two-Step Process

Confusion often arises between the crawler and the indexer. They are different tools.

A spider is a computer program that automatically gathers, or “crawls,” information from the internet. A search engine’s indexer is a program that reads the spider’s information and creates an index based on it.

The spider goes out. It grabs the raw material. The indexer sits back. It processes that material. It builds the library. The index is what allows the search engine to provide relevant results when a user types in a query. No spider, no data. No indexer, no retrieval.

Why are web crawlers called spiders?

The name is literal. Spiders crawl. They follow threads. Web crawlers follow hyperlinks like a spider follows strands on a web. It’s an old analogy, but it holds up. They move from node to node, gathering data as they go.

The internet is a maze. The spiders are the rats. And the search engine is the keeper of the maze. You just want to find the exit.
