The annual Pokémon Day livestream delivered a wave of announcements for fans of the creature-collecting franchise. Held on Friday morning, the event celebrated the 30th anniversary of the original Pokémon games on Game Boy, highlighting both mobile titles and major console reveals. The most significant news centered around the next mainline series, Pokémon Winds and Waves, alongside revivals of older favorites and a hefty dose of nostalgia.
Next-Gen Pokémon: Winds and Waves Arrives on Switch 2
The first mainline Pokémon games designed exclusively for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 have been unveiled. Pokémon Winds and Waves marks the beginning of Generation 10, taking place in a new region defined by volcanic landscapes, murky swamps, and extensive waterways. The starter Pokémon – Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua – were showcased, though further details on new species and legendary Pokémon remain forthcoming.
Pokémon Winds and Waves is scheduled for release in 2027.
Competitive Play Gets a Unified Format: Pokémon Champions
The competitive battling game Pokémon Champions, previously teased in July 2025, has been given a release window for April on both Switch and Switch 2. A mobile version will follow later in the year. Champions aims to streamline competitive Pokémon by integrating mechanics from all nine mainline generations – including Mega Evolution, Dynamaxing, and Terastallization – into a single, standardized format. Players will be able to transfer Pokémon from mainline games to participate in cross-platform battles.
Nostalgia Trip: Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness Returns
A beloved GameCube title, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, is making a comeback exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 Online + Expansion Pack subscribers in March. The game is remembered for its challenging gameplay and the inclusion of corrupted Shadow Pokémon, including the iconic Shadow Lugia.
Retro Revival: The Game Boy Jukebox
A unique product was also announced: a Game Boy-style jukebox containing 45 cartridges, each playing a chiptune track from the original Pokémon Red and Blue. This is meant to be a nostalgic throwback to the original games, but the sheer number of cartridges seems excessive. Pricing details have not been revealed.
The Trading Card Game: 30 Years of Legacy
A new trading card game collection was teased, celebrating three decades of Pokémon. The set will feature revamped versions of classic cards, including Pikachu and Charizard from the original Base Set, Palkia, Darkrai, and Azelf from the Diamond and Pearl era, and the Pikachu and Zekrom tag team card from 2019. However, obtaining these cards may prove difficult for collectors due to potential scalping issues.
The Pokémon Company’s latest presentation has reaffirmed its commitment to both innovation and nostalgia. Whether players are eager to explore a new generation with Winds and Waves or revisit classics like Gale of Darkness, the franchise continues to evolve while honoring its roots.
