Philo Bundles HBO Max and Discovery Plus, Raises Core Plan Price to $33

Philo, the live TV streaming service known for its affordability, is expanding its Core plan to include access to HBO Max and Discovery Plus. This comes with a price increase from $28 to $33 per month, which will take effect immediately for new subscribers and within one month for existing customers.

What’s Changing

Starting Tuesday, Philo Core subscribers gain access to both streaming platforms’ ad-supported tiers. Users will log into HBO Max and Discovery Plus using their Philo credentials. The company intends to integrate ad-free viewing options and select HBO content directly within the Philo app by early 2026. This means that, eventually, users won’t need separate app logins for some content.

Core Plan Details

The Core plan remains a value-focused option:

  • 70+ Channels: Including Hallmark, TLC, and A&E.
  • Ad-Based AMC Plus: Available within the Philo app.
  • On-Demand Library: Thousands of titles.
  • Unlimited DVR: Recordings saved for one year.
  • Multi-Device Streaming: Up to three simultaneous streams.
  • Custom Profiles: Ten profiles per account.
  • Free Channels: Ad-supported channels available to all users.

Why This Matters

Philo is responding to market pressures. Streaming services are increasingly bundling content to attract and retain subscribers. The price hike, while modest, is a direct result of the added value. At $33 per month, Philo remains cheaper than most cable alternatives and many standalone streaming bundles. However, it raises the question of how long Philo can maintain its “budget” positioning as content costs continue to rise.

The shift also highlights a trend: consumers prefer simplified billing and integrated platforms. Philo’s plan to offer in-app streaming of Discovery Plus and HBO content is a step toward this convenience.

Philo’s move balances affordability with expanded content options, but the long-term impact on subscriber retention remains to be seen.
