South Korea’s biggest musical export, BTS, is back after a four-year break imposed by mandatory military service. The group’s highly anticipated return includes a new album, a live concert streamed globally on Netflix, and an accompanying documentary. This marks the first time Netflix has ever broadcast a live concert, signaling the immense scale of the event.
The Military Pause and Reunion
South Korean law requires all able-bodied men between 18 and 28 to serve approximately 18–21 months in the military, with no exceptions for celebrity status. BTS leveraged a two-year deferral period, with Jin being the first member to enlist in 2022, completing his duty in 2024. The remaining members followed in staggered enlistments, finishing by mid-2025. This mandatory service is a core part of South Korean national identity and defense, shaping cultural expectations around young men’s civic duty. The break allowed members to pursue solo projects while keeping the group’s momentum alive.
New Album: Arirang
BTS will release their fifth studio album, Arirang, on March 20. The album features collaborations with renowned producers, including Diplo, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, Mike WiLL Made-It, and Ryan Tedder. The lead single, “SWIM”, is set to drop alongside the full tracklist, which has been teased on the band’s Instagram. The album title Arirang itself is a nod to a traditional Korean folk song that represents the collective spirit of the nation. This suggests a conscious effort by the group to connect their global success with their Korean roots.
Live Concert on Netflix
BTS will hold a comeback concert, BTS The Comeback Live | Arirang, on March 21, streaming live from Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, adjacent to the historic Gyeongbokgung Palace (built in 1395). The event will be broadcast in over 190 countries. For U.S. fans, the live stream begins at 7 a.m. ET / 4 a.m. PT, meaning an early wake-up call is required. This concert serves as an unofficial launch for a world tour that is already largely sold out.
Documentary: BTS: The Return
Directed by Bao Nguyen, the Netflix documentary BTS: The Return follows the group as they reunite in Los Angeles after completing their military service and solo projects. The film chronicles their work on the Arirang album. It will be available on Netflix starting March 27.
The return of BTS is more than just a comeback; it’s a cultural moment that reflects the band’s enduring impact on global music and the unique pressures and traditions of Korean society.
The combination of military service completion, a highly anticipated album, a live-streamed concert, and a behind-the-scenes documentary makes this a landmark event for BTS and their global fanbase.
